Dirt - Alice In Chains Review

1. Them Bones
4.6 Stars

This song is a good album opener, with a very strange time signature and great guitar playing. The solo might be one of the best solos Jerry Cantrell has ever written.

2. Dam That River
4.4 Stars

Now this song is in triplets. When I first listened to this song, I only thought of it as an okay song. Now the song has really grown on me. Also the sound of the guitar at the end of each line sounds really amazing

3. Rain When I Die
5 Stars

This is where the album starts getting real fucking intense (Also, another triplet song). When I first heard this song, it was my favorite Alice In Chains song, and I haven't gotten tired of it. This is actually the song that made me want to listen to the album, which a lot of people find weird, because Rooster or Would? were the songs that made other people like them. This song is truly their most underrated song. I love the beginning, even though people just consider it "noise." I love the sound of the guitar during the verses. I love how Layne sings in the verses. I love the fade out/fade in ending. I fucking love this song.

4. Down In A Hole
4.7 Stars

Jerry Cantrell was nervous before introducing this song to the band, but I'm glad he did. I love the deepness and how relaxing he sings during the verse. Also, "Oh, I want to be inside of you" is an awesome line, ha.

5. Sickman
4.8 Stars

Now, it's very hard to keep on beat with this song. Well, not really, but it sure does change a lot. I love how the "apathetic" way that Layne is singing, and Kinney's drums at the beginning sound pretty damn good.

6. Rooster
5 Stars

A really good song, about Jerry's dad in Vietnam. I love the Unplugged performance of this song. Also a great song to play guitar to. How the chorus just becomes so loud out of no where gets me so intensed up I would blow up a fucking hospital. Also, the guitar after the first chorus sounds pretty good.

7. Junkhead
4.3 Stars

NO SURPRiiZE THT ALiiC3 iiN CH4iiNZ R0T3 UH SUNG B0UT DRUGZZ!! LOLOLOLOLOL
Seriously, I hate people like that. But as long as were talking bad, I really don't like the chorus, but the rest of the song is really good. Also, on another note, some fans think that this song starts a whole story about drugs, I'll try and explain some of it as I go on with the rest of the album. But this song is supposed to be a person going to a dealer and trying some real intense drug for the first time so they could get real fucked up. Some people think Rooster starts this story, as they do drugs because of their dad in war. (I really don't believe this story thing, but it's kind of fun to listen through the songs)

8. Dirt
5 Stars

Title track, awesome. But this song is actually very very good, and has an real awesome guitar intro/riff. Now, if your listening about the story, this song is supposed to be where the person takes the drug, and hates it. Maybe he had a bad trip or something. But the song is supposed to be talking to the drug, and why you hate it. This song is pretty much the main idea of the whole story, which might actually make sense with it being the album name.

9. God Smack
4.9 Stars

This is a great song, one of my favorites. It gets real intense, and this also has a cool guitar intro. Now, back to the whole drug story, this song is supposed to be regretting that you took the drug, and people bothering you about it, saying that they are pretty much worried about your health.

10. Iron Gland

Alright, the interlude, sweet. But in that story, fans think this represents hallucinating.

11. Hate To Feel
5 Stars

A great song, I don't know why but I didn't like this song at first, but this song grew on me, too. Now it's one of my favorite songs of all time. So anyways, this song I think is supposed to be after some huge drug binge, and you've just realized you have an addiction. You're pretty much now extremely pissed off at yourself.

12. Angry Chair
5 Stars

First off, Layne wrote this song. And this song is real fucking awesome. I love the Unplugged performance, it makes me want to cum. Wait, what? Oh, that story thing. This song is pretty much about going to rehab.

13. Would?
5 Stars

Damn, this is the end, huh? Whatever, I've got more Alice In Chains. But this is an awesome song, a tribute to Andrew Wood, and I usually love music more than vocals, but I really love what Layne and Jerry did at the end of every line in the verse. Also, the guitar during verses is great how it goes with what they are singing. I love the unplugged version of this song, too. Now, this song is very hard to interpret. But I think its something like overcoming your addiction, but then still having urges and (I'm not sure about this) even still doing it secretly.

Song Average: 4.9 Stars
My Overall Average: 4.9 Stars

This is my favorite Alice In Chains album, and I love listening to it. That whole drug story is kind of crazy, I know, but they said the lyrics mean what you interpret them as. Also, I only gave the idea of what the songs are about, you can listen yourself to try and figure some of it out. But this is one of my favorite albums of all time. Fucking get it if you don't have it. Also, Alice In Chains is a little harder to get into, so please give them time. When you do start liking them, they are pretty much at least one of the best bands that you have ever listened to, ever.

Surfer Rosa - Pixies Review

1. Bone Machine
5 Stars

A very great song, it's one of my favorite songs off the album. It has a very raw sound and a very powerful chorus. The guitar is very well-played and the lyrics are very creative.

2. Break My Body
4.8 Stars

Once again, the guitar has a very raw sound and very catchy lyrics. This song does take a while to get into, but so do a lot of their other songs, but overall, this is a great song.

3. Something Against You
4 Stars

My least favorite song, but it's still a prettu good song. Steve Albini, the record's producer, put Black Francis's voice through an amp (I'm not sure if that was it) to get the really rough sound out of it.

4. Broken Face
4.2 Stars

This is probably the song I listen to the least on the whole record, Somethisong Against You probably being the second. I'm pretty sure this song is about self-mutilation, and even if it's not it really seems like it.

5. Gigantic
4.7 Stars

Named as a "Pixies classic," Gigantic plays the same bass line throughout the whole song, and has a a really raw (again) guitar chord progression. Kim Deal's only song on lead vocals that's on a studio album. For me, this song marks where everything starts getting really good on the album. The songs meaning is about watching a black man and white woman have sex, and is most about "big black cocks." What isn't to like about this song?

6. River Euphrates
5 Stars

This is one of the best (in my opinion) Pixies songs of all time, along with other songs on this album.

7. Where Is My Mind?
5 Stars

This song marks the second half of the album. This is the song that I liked right away. This is the song that made me want to keep listening to Surfer Rosa. This is the song that made me want to get more Pixies albums. This was my favorite song for a really long time. If it wasn't for this song, I probably wouldn't have listened to Surfer Rosa again. All of their songs take a while to really grow on you, but with this song I was instantly blown away. This song, of course, also appeared at the end of Fight Club and now, because of that, this is the only Pixies song anyone really likes or knows at all, which actually annoys me a lot now. Same thing with anyone that only knows the Pixies from Fight Club. A little note about the bass line, almost every bassist thinks Kim Deal goes into sixteenth notes during the end, but she stays with eighth notes the whole time.

8. Cactus
5 Stars

The guitar has a really bluesy sound to it. This was the second song that I really got "hooked" on. Even though the lyrics kind of creeped me out, I still would listen to it. Also, this song is one of many examples of Lovering's (the drummer) repeated use of the same drum beat.\

9. Tony's Theme
3 Stars

I'll be honest, I really don't like this song. Some parts of it are kind of good, but all together this song is kind of boring.

10. Oh My Golly!
3.9 Stars

This song is a good example of Black Francis's bilingual vocals (Vamos being next).

11. Vamos
4.5 Stars

Let's go play by the beach!
I really like this song a lot, but I never listen to it because of the interlude is so long. I know that's kind of a weird reason to not listen to it, but instead I just listen to the version off of Come On, Pilgrim. But what sucks is that the song, vocals and music, is performed way better off the Surfer Rosa version.

12. I'm Amazed
5 Stars

This is another one of those songs that I liked right away after listening to it once. This is a great song and one of my favorite pixies songs.

13. Brick Is Red
5 Stars

Again, one of those songs I liked right away, and again one of those songs that are one of my favorite Pixies songs. I really like listening to the gutiar intro for some reason, it is of course very raw and when it gets to the vocal parts, it's still very great. This song feels a lot longer than just 2 minutes.

Song Average: 4.6 Stars
My Overall Average: 4.8 Stars

A very, very raw album, which is what I prefer. This might be their rawest album they have ever made. Joey Santiago is a very good guitarist, along with Black Francis. Kim Deal is a very "simple" bassist, along with David Lovering with his repeated drum beats. Overall, this is a very great album, either this or Doolittle are my favorite albums. I highly reccomend this album, and to anyone listening to it for the first time, please give it time. This is a kind of album that you need to wait until you start feeling the full effect of it.
